General Surgery

General Surgery is a discipline that requires knowledge of and familiarity with a broad spectrum of diseases that may require surgical treatment.  A “general surgeon” may perform routine procedures within the physician’s office or more complicated operations requiring a medical team within the hospital.  Areas of the body treated by general surgery include the stomach, liver, intestines, appendix, gallbladder, breasts, various glands, some arteries and veins, and the skin.  Patients are often referred to a general surgeon by a primary care physician, though self-referrals may be acceptable within certain health plans and insurances.
