Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

Orthopedics is the medical and surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, management and treatment of diseases and disorders of the skeletal system, including the repair of joints, bones, ligaments and tendons.  An “orthopedic surgeon” may perform routine procedures within the physician’s office or more complicated operations requiring a medical team within the hospital.  Areas of the body treated by an orthopedic surgeon include all joints, feet, hands and spine.  Patients are often referred to an orthopedic surgeon by a primary care physician, though self-referrals may be acceptable within certain health plans and insurances.
